Why choose a Dedicated Home EV Charger?

A dedicated home EV charger is the easiest and most convenient way to charge your electric car at home - for multiple reasons. Many EV owners start off by using a standard 3-pin plug, known as a 'granny charger'. This can be useful in emergencies, but it's not ideal as your main, long-term charging solution. A proper 7kW home EV charger is designed for regular EV charging, charges much faster than a domestic socket, and gives you better control through smart scheduling, app settings and overnight charging.

The best home EV charger for you, depends on your vehicle, daily mileage, parking arrangement, electricity tariff, and whether you prefer a tethered or untethered unit. Some drivers prioritise simple plug-and-charge operation, while others want app controls, scheduled charging, solar integration, or compatibility with an off-peak EV tariff. We can recommend suitable models after reviewing your vehicle and property.

Are all home EV chargers compatible with every model of electric car?

Pretty much, this is a question we're asked often. Most modern home EV Chargers use a Type 2 connection and are compatible with the majority of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in the UK - all home EV chargers supplied and installed by Glasgow EV Chargers are Type 2 plugs, although we can cater for vehicles with Type 1 where required. Compatibility can also depend on the charging cable, vehicle settings, and the maximum charging rate supported by the car. We'll check your vehicle before recommending a charger.

Should i get a tethered or untethered EV charger?

A tethered charger has a charging cable permanently attached, making it quick and convenient to plug in when you arrive home. An untethered charger has a socket, allowing you to use and replace your own charging cable. Tethered models are often preferred for convenience, while untethered units can look tidier and provide more flexibility if you change vehicles. For those customers with large driveways, or off-street parking, where a longer charging cable may be required, we usually recommend untethered for the flexibility it gives them.

Can I get the off-peak/overnight EV tariff with your EV chargers?

Yes - all of the smart home chargers we offer can schedule charging during cheaper off-peak periods, or integrate directly with your energy company's app/system. Chargers such as the Ohme Home Pro, Ohme ePod, Zappi, Hypervolt, and more support scheduled charging through their own app or through the energy company's. Tariff compatibility can change, so we check the current charger, vehicle and energy-account requirements before installation.
